Meaning
Internet is made of two words Interconnect and network. Thus internet is a way to interconnect networks The Internet is like a network of networks where any computer can link up to information stored within it. But for most of us internet is a storehouse of knowledge which is just a click away.
History Of internet
The idea of Internet was first developed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense (Britannica, 2002). ARPA, which was under the Pentagon, had an objective to build a network that would allow scientists at different locations to share their information and work together on military and scientific projects
Since then it has been constantly improving and now has become an important part of our life.
Importance of Internet
Undoubtedly Internet changed our life enormously; there are many advantages of Internet that show you the importance of this new medium. Internet changed our life in a positive way.
First we have to make a differentiation concerning the usage. We can use the Internet at home for personal or you at work for professional usage
Let’s come to the first. To spend a part of our day on the Internet is for many people quite normal. “Learning by doing”, everybody knows this phrase and it’s still an essential part concerning the Internet. Children also use the Internet, most of the time they will “play” over the Internet, but they learn to work with the computer. They use this medium to get information about all kinds topics. Maybe some of them are interested in chatting or some use E-mails to keep in touch. Other social networking Sites Like “orkut “are also an integral part to contact everyone. The search engines has made information available at our clicks. Websites are like new doors that are eager to open for us to share knowledge. We can download music or see a new video without any expense
Professionally internet, links millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals worldwide. Internet is widely used in many activities; virtually people can do shopping on-line, finding news or current weather report, checking stock prices, exchanging files, or even conducting net-conferences. We can even earn from homes through internet
Disadvantages of Internet
But as we say;” every rose has thorns”, so does internet if not used properly. Internet has become a tool for video and audio privacy. It is constantly being misused by hackers to invade our private life and send viruses. Internet is also now a new weapon for criminals and terrorists who hack bank accounts and plot against country’s security.
On the other hand for Internet can also be harmful for students. Sometimes children become addicted to internet and get lost in the technology world. Students visit adult sites and other harmful sites that one must not see. But we must understand internet is like a sword which we can use either to protect us or to destroy others. It is the mind that is the real computer.
Conclusion
The world of tomorrow will be the world of technology, the world of internet. So we must all try to make pace with technology and explore this new world of unlimited knowledge but with precautions. Now the world has shrunk on our computer screens. In the words of Bill Gates” The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.”
